A weekend with Contact Improvisation and Axis Syllabus,

May 21-23 2010

Daniel Bear Davis(USA) - Contact Improvisation
Daniel Bear Davis has been teaching and dancing CI for 10 years. He utilizes the form in his dance theatre company, Shah and Blah Productions (youtube.com/shahandblahproductions) as well as in acrobatic stilt theatre work with The Carpetbag Brigade (carpetbagbrigade.com). His teaching has been greatly influenced by his study of The Axis Syllabus (a movement analysis method) with Frey Faust and by his body work practice. His approach to CI is one of constant research into expansion of range and choice. His performance work tends towards highly structured improvisation, often with a strong image or content core. He has also been influenced by the countless bizarre apparatuses and architectures he’s performed on including construction scaffolding, boulders in the desert, the walls of a boat, a submarine, a suspended welded sphere, and many more. He will be teaching this summer at Frey Faust's Nomadic College in Outukumpu as well as working with Anna Jussilainen and The Reality Research Center in Helsinki in the fall.
Daniel's class description:
Architectural Playground: The Joys of Structure (mixed-level CI class with a focus on bones). Through support from the bones and an understanding of structural integrity, we find buoyancy, resiliency, and specificity. The playground comes to life with counterbalances, launching pads, and unexpected levers. We will learn to offer dynamic support and recognize, create, and take advantage of the joints for increased kinetic potential.
Clear and responsive structures offer us ground from which to fly.

Ana Flecha (USA/Brazil) - Axis Syllabus
Ana Flecha has been presenting work for the last decade, recently receiving support from Dancer's Group and Theatre Bay Area, and the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. She will be presenting her solo The Red Queen in Estonia this May as part of the symposium Imagining Bodies: Landscape, Memory, Community at the University of Tallinn. Ana was the Artist in Residence at the Nomadic College Brazil in March and April 2010 where she developed new dance and video work along with an international group of artists. In the Spring of 2009 she performed with Kevin O’Connor in his piece The Sunlight Zone, in California and Ontario, Canada. Ana was the 2008 Artist in Residence at the Four Eighteen Project in Santa Cruz where she presented My American Dream, a multi media dance theater piece about American culture and identity. She has performed with Cid Pearlman Performance Projects, Shah and Blah Productions, Frey Faust, Nita Little, Karl Schaffer, Therese Adams, , Sharon Took Zozaya, and was one of the original members of Mir & a Co. aerial dance. She teaches classes based in the Axis Syllabus and contact improvisation locally and internationally. She will be teaching this summer at Frey Faust's Nomadic College in Outukumpu, Finland.
Ana's class description:
The Space Between: Finding Neutral
This workshop will introduce principles from the Axis Syllabus (AS) and examine how they relate to the practice of contact improvisation. We will explore the usefulness of corporeal limitations as we search for organic pathways through space, through our bodies, and through contact with other people. The idea of "limitations" in the body can be perceived as something undesirable or negative. The AS work contrarily views limitations as guides, as useful information which we can use, with respect, to transcend habits and patterns which get in our way and honor our body's form as well as function, working with these guides, along with natural forces such as gravity, the effects of momentum, and centrifugal force. The focus will be on awakening to sensation, self-discovery, and embracing boundaries from the inside out.
